Naija Shine: Best upcoming movies of the year

If there’s one thing that movie buffs are hoping for in 2022, it’s the latest films that will be released this year. There is a slew of fantastic titles on the way, particularly in the superhero category. Hundreds of millions of people are anticipating these new films and are speculating about the narrative and potential shock to bust the box office.

If you consider yourself a movie enthusiast, seeing the year’s most anticipated films is a must. Take a peek at some of the movies that will be released in 2022. You can download and stream a copy here in Naija Shine as soon as they become available!

Death on the Nile

During the pandemic, Death on the Nile has been postponed several times. The long-awaited film will finally hit the big screen in February of this year. The plot of this thriller and mystery film is based on Murder on the Orient Express, a whodunit film. Our moustached hero, Kenneth Branagh, will reprise his role as the pernickety investigator Hercule Poirot in a follow-up film.

We can’t help but be excited by the fact that the picture stars some of Hollywood’s most well-known actors and actresses, including Gal Gadot. The Egyptian setting of the film, which is based on Agatha Christie’s novel, also provides an exotic touch to the film.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is one of the most anticipated films of the year. Rumours online say this film would set a new record for the most Marvel characters appearing in a single film, as well that one of the main characters may die.

Doctor Stephen Strange and Wanda Maximoff are at the centre of the story as they negotiate the multiverse’s ills. To understand the flow of events, watch the Disney+ episodes Wandavision and Loki before seeing this film.

The Batman

Countless actors attempted to portray the heroic multi-millionaire who battles crime in a bat costume, to no avail. Despite the fact that the entire community agrees that Christian Bale’s Batman is still unrivalled in terms of intensity, we’re betting that Robert Pattinson’s Batman will give Bale a run for his money.

Robert’s method-and-madness as Batman gives a new dimension to the character we all know and adore. To add to the intrigue, Matt Reeves has been revealed as the film’s director, so we may expect a darker-than-dark DC flick.

Don’t Worry Darling

Don’t Worry Darling, a psychological drama is another picture that audiences are anticipating this year. Florence Pugh and Harry Styles will play a married couple in the 1950s in the film. Florence’s character is about to learn some shocking secrets about her spouse, as well as witness some strange incidents.

The Northman

The Northman is a film about a Viking prince starring our favourite indie filmmaker Robert Eggers, who made his big-screen debut with the pilgrim horror picture Witch in 2015. We can’t get enough of Eggers’ singularly odd storytelling, which he previously provided in The Lighthouse.

This new picture from the independent actor is based on a revenge story from the 10th century. The film was made in Iceland and stars the stunning Alexander Skarsgard.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

For DC fans, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, a film based on this renowned realm, will be released. Jason Momoa will return as Arthur and go on yet another nautical adventure. There are currently few details about the narrative of the film or who the antagonist will be.

Thor: Love and Thunder

In July 2022, Marvel will release yet another long-awaited film. Thor: Love and Thunder feature Thor, Valkyrie, Jane Foster and the Asgardian warriors. Gorr the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale, will be pitted against the Marvel characters.

Other well-known characters, including the Guardians of the Galaxy’s Star-Lord, Nebula, Drax and Mantis, will also be there. The rest of the movie’s details are being kept under wraps, leaving fans guessing about what will happen next in the MCU’s next instalment.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

With this film on the big screen, we’re transported back to the Nicolas Cage Renaissance. This time, the world’s favourite lunatic goes meta by dressing up as a fashionable version of himself. Get a load of Nic Cage in this funhouse-mirror comedy about a man who became a CIA agent to help take down one of his overly enthusiastic admirers. Here’s where you can get your serotonin fix and see another Nicholas Cage classic.

Nope

We can always count on Jordan Peele to deliver a masterpiece whenever he walks behind the camera. Have you watched the movie ‘Get Out’, for example? There is nothing that comes close to it. Even Peele’s earlier film, ‘Us’, didn’t stand a chance, but this latest release may just challenge Get Out for the title of finest Peele film.

Nothing is known about this picture other than it will star Daniel Kaluuya, Steven Yeun, and Keke Palmer and will be set in the horror genre. It’s definitely something to look forward to!

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Even though we will no longer see King T’Challa in this film, director Ryan Coogler has assured us that Wakanda Forever would honour Chadwick Boseman. As a Marvel film, we have no doubts that it will be a smash hit. While it might be bittersweet, there’s much to look forward to in the upcoming Black Panther picture.

Avatar 2

It’s been years since the original Avatar movie hit theatres and became one of the world’s biggest box office hits. This sci-fi extravaganza will transport us back to the Avatars’ wonderful universe as we embark on new adventures and rediscover the place we first encountered 13 years ago.

Babylon

We all know how much we freaked out when Whiplash and La La Land came out, so it’s safe to say we’ll be on the lookout for anything Damien Chazelle puts out. This film will include some of Hollywood’s best actors and actresses, including Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie and will follow the transformation of the motion picture business from silent to talkies!

Minions: The Rise of Gru

With its basic yet entertaining story, the ‘Despicable Me’ surprisingly captivated the hearts of everyone. We can’t deny that we adore Gru’s young kids and minions, but the man himself deserves some appreciation as well. We’d all get to see Gru’s evil origin tale as well as how he met the minions in this flick. It’s a fascinating subject to investigate.

Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse

We’ve finished the meme, and we’re ready for more! Fortunately, Marvel never fails to deliver when it comes to teasing a new Spiderman film. There are more characters in the scenario this time. We all know that Peter and Miles need to communicate, and we couldn’t help but shiver in anticipation of Spider Gwen’s arrival!

The Killers of Flower Moon

A film with Martin Scorsese, Robert de Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio ? Do we even need to say more? This film will blow the fish out of the water with its spectacular narration, direction and cast.

There is much to look forward to since the film is based on the runaway bestseller mystery of the Osage tribe murder that occurred in 1920. This event is what led to the creation of the police force we know as the FBI. The Killers of Flower Moon is by far the best that we can get for a capital E event this year!

Jurassic World Dominion

Jurassic movies have always been a big part of our lives since we were kids. We’re looking forward to the adventures that this new realm of domination will bring us, especially after the spectacular record set by the previous film!

We’re ready to see the huge monsters hit the screen once more and witness the beauty of wildlife, even if it’s been squandered in time.

The Worst Person in the World

If you ever feel like yearning, this film by Joachim Trier entitled The Worst Person in the World will be the perfect film for you. This wonderful film of self-discovery acts as the threequel to Joachim’s thematically connected Oslo trilogy. The film tells the romantic tale of Julie (Renate Reinsve, one of the best film actresses today).

Julie is an emotionally unfulfilled woman who is quickly approaching her 30s. This classic film heroine is romantically involved and was currently in a passionate, tumultuous relationship with Aksel played by Anders Danielsen Lie who is an equally incandescent actor as Renate. This proverbial spanner of romance was thrown off the loop once the sad boy Eivind entered the scene. It’s an instant classic film that shows how we often seek out fulfilment in the wrong people.
